Starting from the middle of the nineteenth century, the Age of New Imperialism took over the world. Imperialism is the method by which a country extends its borders either through military force or by diplomacy. The main motives that drove colonization and imperialism were belief in European superiority and industrialization or modernization. As the Industrial Revolution escalated, countries needed lands with raw materials and natural resources, as well as new markets across the globe that would greatly benefit their economy. Because Europe had advanced so greatly due to industrialization and the modernization of technology in such a short amount of time, Europeans believed that they were the superior race of the world. With that attitude, they believed that they should plant their flag on as many places as possible across the world. Most important however was the economic motivation to be a strong world power through trade and finance. (p.9). the quotation mentioned is an example of how Troy feels he will never amount to anything because he is a black man in the white mans world. Therefore, Troy limits his goals in life. Maintaining a job, having a roof over his head, and food on the table is Troys idea of success. This is his idea of success because he has accomplished this while having a hard life. Troy fences himself into his own little world where there is no room for anyone to question or judge him. Meanwhile Troys bitterness towards the white man creates callousness towards his son Cory. Cory, being a high school student, anticipates making it big playing football. When he found them at the creek, he had the leather mule straps; he started to beat Troy. Troy was naturally scared so he ran away. He looked back at his father and realized that his father didnt care about beating him, he just wanted the girl. Troy came back; he ripped the straps out of his fathers hand. He then started to beat his father with them. His father, not afraid of Troy, beat up Troy. Troy was left there, his eyes were swelled shut. He didnt know what to do. He couldnt go back to his fathers house, so he went to another town 200 miles away. This is when Troy became a man at the age of 14. In the town, Mobile, it was hard for him to survive. He had to steal food, and eventually money. A man shot him after he tried to steal his money. Troy had his knife and commenced to stab him after he was shot. They told him that he killed the man. They put Troy in the state penitentiary for that. He spent 15 long years there. When he came out, he met Rose. All of his stealing habits were gone. Troy and Rose got married. At the time, Troy had a son from a previous marriage. He never spend time with this son, because he was in jail. After they were married, they wanted to have a son. Cory, their son, was born. Troy thought that he was a good husband to Rose because he provided her with food and a house. He wasnt a good husband because he didnt give her love and compassion. These two things are needed in a good marriage. She centered her whole life around him and he gave her almost nothing. When she had a problem, she couldnt go to him. Troy also wasnt faithful to Rose. He went off and had an affair with another woman. Rose was heart-broken by this. She couldnt believe Troy could do this to her. She devoted her life to him and he goes and stabs her in the back. On top of that, Troy had a child with his mistress. The woman died giving birth. Troy asked Rose to take care of the baby. Rose did, what else could she have done? Troy was not a good husband. Troy took care of Gabriel after the war. This made him think that he was a good brother. Troy wasnt a good brother to Gabriel. He stole the war money that Gabriel got. He used the money that he got to build himself a house. Gabriel couldnt take care of himself, so Troy oversaw Gabriels life. After a while Gabriel moved out. He went to live in Mrs. Pearls house, down the street. Troy was mad because now that Gabriel wasnt living in his house, he didnt collect rent from him. The paper will start with historical overview of the Netflix Company and conclude with recommendations based on the analysis suggesting how Netflix could run its future operations to stay competitive in the entertainment market and Industry. Company History Netflix began operation in 1997 as a DVD by mail rental service (About Netflix, 2017). After many years, it has morphed into the largest online television network, with over 100 million members worldwide which streams over 125 million hours of programming per day. Its members are able to watch on multiple different devices from just about anywhere, at any time. These entertainment choices include films, television, documentaries, and original programming (About Netflix, 2017). With an enterprise value of $71.47 billion, this internet giant has changed the way we consume modern media and entertainment (Netflix Enterprise Value, 2017). Netflix has frequently invested in original programming that is generated strongly based on the trends of the consumer. This company has market insight that Nielsen ratings can’t compare with. In addition to the number of people watching programming, Netflix can also tell when users watch, how long they typically watch for, what people want to see, and much more. This information is used to provide the highest quality experience for the consumer. With a large share of the online streaming market cornered, Netflix has openly said that their biggest current competitor is sleep (Netflixs View: Internet TV is replacing linear TV, 2017). Supply and Demand Conditions Supply and demand is the availability of an outcome for a certain product and the demand for that product has on cost. Meaning that if there is a low supply with a high demand the price increases or if the supply is greater with a demand that is lower than the price will likely drop. When it comes to Netflix and its supply and demand conditions, you can see that they are also vulnerable to the same supply and demand stress as other business organizations. Netflix is constantly expanding the streaming list of content providers along with their competitors such as Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO and other premium networks. The demand for growth in these streaming companies has driven prices upwards over the last few years. The cable industry, which is what Netflix is classified under, is continuously and quickly changing.   Advances in technology have driven the demand for cable television and companies like Netflix to have easily and quickly accessible content. In 1948, cable television originated in Arkansas, Oregon, and Pennsylvania to enhance poor reception of traditional broadcast television signals in remote areas. (History of Cable, n.d.) During the 50’s and 60’s, cable subscriptions grew from 14,000 subscribers to 850,000 subscribers. From the 1990’s into the present, cable has continued to rapidly grow due to the different services that it offered customers. As customers started demanding higher quality cable service, the demand for basic cable started to decline. Satellite television originally provided more channels to their customers which increased the demand for these more extensive systems over the traditional basic cable system. Due to this high demand, the costs for these products continues to grow. The latest movement in the cable television industry is media streaming. This has caused massive growth for Netflix and similar services. Netflix has positioned itself to be a frontrunner in the media streaming industry. As a streaming provider, Netflix gives its customers the ability to watch ad free content from a large array of devices, at any time. This makes for a high demand as it gives customers more freedom than traditional cable packages. One other factor is the low cost of Netflix compared to the cost of cable subscriptions. The average monthly cable bill is over $120, which is more than a $35 average increase from the cost in 2011, while the average monthly fee for streaming services is $8 per month.   With the demand for streaming services on the rise, it is understandable that Netflix subscriptions would increase. If Netflix continues to grow its internet television concept of providing TV shows and movies that customers demand, it will hold their spot as an industry leader in the marketplace.   With very strong reception from critics and customers alike, they will need to continue with the production of original content, such as original TV series and movies, which have not only increased the demand for services, but has also increased their profits. There are few supply issues facing Netflix. In the streaming market, there are few competing firms that may threaten the market share of Netflix. These firms offer alike services at a comparable price to Netflix This means that the amount of substitutes that can supply similar quality services as Netflix are few.   The largest supply issue Netflix faces is technological change.   However, keeping up relations with various electronic devices, remaining relevant should be fairly easy. Price Elasticity and Demand Price elasticity of demand the relationship between change in the demanded quantity of a product and a change in the products price. If the price of services increase, it could affect the quantity of services demanded. There are a handful of quality substitutes for Netflix. In the cable industry itself, AT&T, Comcast, and Time-Warner, are all providers of services that compete for the same customers as Netflix. In the streaming market, Netflix competitors are other content providers such as Amazon Prime and Hulu. The major factor in this competition is pricing and content availability.  Ã‚   In 2014, Netflix increased consumer cost by $1-2 each month. While the price increase was a risky choice, it was necessary because of the rising prices of acquiring more content. Before this change, subscription plans for streaming and DVD rentals rose to $8 a month for streaming and $10 a month for streaming and DVD rentals. In 2011, this was raised again. All subscribers would have to pay $16 a month for both streaming and DVD rentals which is nearly a 60% rise in cost for the consumer. There was a large backlash from consumers as they felt that the small streaming library was not enough to justify those costs. This price increase was a way for Netflix to upgrade and expand the library content they were offering for streaming. With this price increase, Netflix lost nearly 750,000 subscribers and its stock tumbled in the following months. However, with Netflix expanding the production of their original series, this decrease of subscriber growth was only temporary. Netflix doesn†™t appear to see price elasticity as risk for their organization, but more of a prospect. As seen on the graph above, the stock and earnings of Netflix have proven to be growing at a steady rate over the last few years. Netflix has reported that the amount of watching from the average subscriber has grown in every quarter after the fourth quarter since 2011. Netflix continues to grow. In Argentina, United Kingdom, Brazil, Irelands, Chile, and Mexico is expected to make up more than a third of TV in the average household by 2020. If Netflix raised prices again, it could cause customers to other platforms because of the lower cost. On the other hand, if Netflix would lower its price, then the demand for its service could potentially increase. Netflix is a service that could be considered a luxury and not a necessity. This would provide Netflix a higher elasticity of demand. This may not be the case in the future as many people are beginning to use Netflix as their primary entertainment source. This means that in the customer’s budget, Netflix has already started to become a monthly expense, replacing standard cable services. As time goes on, it is expected that consumers will change their spending habits to completely move away from cable and move directly to streaming services which would increase the elasticity of Netflix. Although the expense is monthly, it will only be a small percentage of the consumer budget making it an inelastic demand. Because the market for media streaming is broadly defined, the number of available substitutes is low therefore it is inelastic. Netflix has shown to be profitably consistent, which allows shareholders to expand its equity as earnings are built up over time making Netflix more valuable. Money is being spent by Netflix to expand into more international markets after seeing huge success in its international growth into countries like the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Canada. This has allowed Netflix to study the trends of consumers across the world to create content that is palatable in many nations. This expansion should assist in lowering overall costs and increase the company’s profitability. Costs of Production Currently, Netflix offers streaming services on movies and TV shows. They have three subscription levels: Basic, Standard, and Premium. Netflix is currently working to grow their offerings and continue with original programming. The main cost that Netflix incurs comes from the licensing and production of their streamable titles. The cost of maintaining their content library has been quickly rising over the last five years as they expand the choices that they are offering to consumers, which can be seen in the chart below. While the largest cost for Netflix is their content, they also have various SG&A expenses, otherwise known as selling, general and administrative expenses. These expenses have also grown as the demand for their rises. From 2012 to 2015, these SG&A expenses had more than doubled. These costs have been growing as the consumer’s demand for more varied content grows and as Netflix expands into the international marketplace. This demand by consumers that Netflix has met, has resulted in a continuous growth for the Netflix Company. In 2016, the COGS had a nearly 32% increase in from the year previous. These growing costs for the most part have not prevented company growth. As you can see below, by continuing to increase the content available, Netflix has also helped itself to create strong sales growth. In 2016, Netflix experienced sales growth of 30.26%. Market Share While Netflix is the largest paid for streaming service, it has a market share of only around 12.7% (Netflix Incs Competitiveness, 2017) . The reason for this is that Netflix’s marketplace competitors are well established cable corporations and video providers that have many other products and services that would result in a higher revenue than Netflix. These companies include Amazon, Comcast, Cablevison, and Time Warner Cable. Although Netflix has strong sales growth, their profitability is lower than market competitors, with a net margin of 2.36%. Competitors in this market have an average net margin of just under 11% (NFLXs Competition by Segment and its Market Share, 2017). Due to the large capital and resources required to enter this market, Netflix will need to be aware of the streaming services provided by established cable companies and original content providers. These pose the greatest risk due to their large access to streamable content and access to existing customers. The market structure that Netflix operates under is an oligopoly. In an oligopoly, there are a few companies that control the entire market. In the streaming market, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Are the main competitors. In this type of market, price wars have a chance of occurring.   This means if one of these companies decides to drop its prices, the others must also drop prices in order to stay competitive. Taking a look at the current state of the market, this is evident because all of the major providers have comparably priced packages for their product. With Netflix being the market leader, they have large influence over this market. If Netflix decides to reduce prices, then Hulu and Amazon must also reduce consumer cost or risk losing customers to Netflix.   Recommendations With streaming quickly becoming the industry standard in television viewing, Netflix is expected to continue to increase its hold on the industry and market. Their current COGS while increasing, has provided Netflix a strong advantage in terms of sales growth due to their original content and variety of offerings. This current strategy seems to be working well for them. While some of the most expensive options to produce are original programming, these expensive productions are key to attracting customers due to the lack of availability from other previously subscribed to services.   This will also be helpful in further securing themselves in the marketplace. As mentioned earlier it will also be important for Netflix to keep developing their technology and continue to partner with different companies to update and keep their technology modern and relevant. By persistently providing the services and integration that consumers desire, Netflix can continue to expand its service to more consumers than it currently does.   If Netflix can continue to understand the wants of the consumers, then they will remain leaders in their market. In order to appeal to the audience and bring forth some empathy, Macbeth must show his righteous morals through his own soliloquies or through other characters’ lines. Macbeth’s changing attitude is influenced not only by Lady Macbeth’s convincing words, but also too by his mind, which is only human and therefore subject to temptation. Assignment: Police Discretion To me discretion is something that we always use like in how we choose things like a movie to watch food to eat we always have to be very discrete in what we choose to do. There are a lot of people that would think that it would be better if discretion was taken away from the police. What most of the people do not realize is that discretion needs to be exercised. Discretion is not the problem; the abuse of discretion by some people is.In this world there is always that bad area that has the normal answer to different situations that may not apply. Having that right to exercise to discretion a police officer may be able to find the best solution always. In the scenario there was a couple of times were the police officer had to use discretion the first one was when the suspect fell to the ground she could of just left him there and not return to check up on him the next one was when the suspect started running away she could of just left and let it be.The officer could of just stopped at the struggle and had called for backup but she did not she decided to continue. These are the type of discretions that I spotted in this scenario. In my opinion I think that discretion was not very well implemented because if it was going to be a long pursuit and the suspect was going to hurt her she could of easily called for backup immediately, even though she did not know it was going to be hard to catch this suspect the best thing to do was to call for help that way this situation would have been easier and less painful for her.I think that discretion should not be controlled. I think a lot of police officers by using good judgment they might and they will let some things slide if they are able to. Not in every situation is good it has ups and its downs, police officers should be able to make a good judgment calls on the scene. Arresting someone is not always the best solution for a situation they need to analyze how they could fix the situation with discretion.

Nora and Helmer Essay Example Nora and Helmer Essay Nora and Helmer Essay The relationship between Helmer and Nora strikes modern readers as intolerable.   Helmer assumes a position of superiority in the marriage which takes for granted his wife’s role as decorative accompaniment to the man of action and achievement.   At the end of the play Nora declares that she is not just a wife and mother. â€Å"I believe that before all else I am a human being, just as you are† (77).   Until the events of the play Nora has accepted her role as flighty, unserious, trivial, â€Å"charming† consort, though Ibsen shows from very early on that this is not the whole truth about her.   Her actions have been motivated largely by a desire to protect her husband from the consequences of his own arrogant folly.   It is a moment of great irony when Helmer says â€Å"I’ve forgiven you† (73), since her actions have been entirely self-sacrificing, and designed to save him, physically and mentally.   In her enlightened state she finds i t impossible to forgive him. Helmer’s attitudes are partly characteristic of his time, but it is clear that he has personal weaknesses that make his behavior more infuriating.   He calls Nora his â€Å"little lark† (3), â€Å"my little squirrel† (4) and other such patronizing endearments.   He also sees her as considerably less than a mature adult in her handling of the world.   She is â€Å"my little spendthrift† and â€Å"my little featherbrain† (4).   Money â€Å"just slips through your fingers† (6), though he is of course unaware of why she needs money.   His fussy attitude to debt, which he declares as a sort of gospel law to her, is the cause of the whole Krogstad crisis.   She can never tell him where the money came from – the money that saved his life – because â€Å"it would hurt his self-respect–wound his pride†¦ Our whole marriage would be wrecked by it† (16).   His pompous arrogance and priggishness force Nora to spin an elaborate fabric of concealment, and lead eventually to her realization of the truth.   Similarly his declaration that â€Å"Almost all cases of early delinquency can be traced to dishonest mothers† (32) terrifies her, but also reveals the central contempt he has for women generally, and therefore, though he would not admit it, for Nora herself.   Her only device to influence him seems to be her acceptance of the demeaning role he has designed for her.   If he will agree to reinstate Krogstad â€Å"Your squirrel would skip about and play all sorts of pretty tricks† (40).   He will not do it because he fears people would laugh at him for being influenced by his wife.   He is â€Å"entirely unimpeachable† (41) in contrast to her father, and anyway, Krogstad would address him by his Christian name, at which Nora’s mask comes off inadvertently and she says â€Å"But–it’s all so petty† (41), a disastrous thing to say to so egocentric a man. His behavior in Act 3 reveals all the truth of his deepest assumptions about her and their relationship.   When she tells him he is always right she is â€Å"my sweet, sensible little lark† (65).   His conception of their marriage is that she is a property: â€Å"Why shouldn’t I look at my own dearest treasure? – at all this loveliness that is mine† (65).   His passion for his â€Å"young bride† (66) is misplaced, as he disregards her mood.   How can she not want him at the moment, â€Å"Aren’t I your husband –?† (66)?   All the assumptions of power are in his words, and a disregard for her human individuality.   His romantic dream of saving her from danger seems stupid in the circumstances, and leads to his horrific change of tone when he reads Krogstad’s letter.   Now she is â€Å"a hypocrite, a liar† (71).   She has inherited her father’s lack of principle.   He urges her, with supreme i rony, to â€Å"stop all this play-acting† (71).   She will no longer be allowed to bring up the children, though the pretence of normal married life will be maintained for the sake of appearances.   Then his response to the second letter is sickening:   â€Å"Nora, I’m saved! I’m saved!† (72), his thoughts concentrated, as they always have been in fact, entirely on himself.   Then he can go back to the role of protecting knight, he thinks. â€Å"There’s something very endearing about a woman’s helplessness† (73).   But by now Nora has seen the truth, and the cataclysmic but liberating end is in sight. Nora has accepted her position without serious question until this final crisis, again as a result of social convention.   The marriage relationship has required her to be a child, and that is what she has done.   She never rebels at Helmer’s patronizing descriptions of her, choosing to see them only as affectionate, and indeed living her life in an immature fashion.   She is always laughing gaily, childishly eating macaroons and sweets in secret: â€Å"(Wags a threatening finger at her): Has my little sweet-tooth been breaking rules today?† (7). She is happy to let him think that her desire for money is a result of her irresponsibility.   â€Å"Oh! How lovely it all is† (8), she cries of her life in general.   With Mrs Linde she is terribly insensitive in the way children are.   She tells this aging, childless widow that â€Å"I want you to tell me all about yourself† but immediately goes on to burst out naively that with Helmer’s new j ob, â€Å"I’m so happy and excited! Won’t it be wonderful to have lots and lots of money, and nothing to worry about† (10).   But when Mrs Linde says â€Å"You’re just a child, Nora† (13), it begins to become clear that there is far more to her.   The money was borrowed to save Helmer’s life, and indeed all the ramifications of her actions stem from the necessity to prevent him from knowing how she got the money, to protect his foolish male arrogance, in fact.   Money can be raised by a wife in this patriarchal world â€Å"if a wife has a good head on her shoulders† (15), and this is exactly what she has.   Now we can see why she asks him for money, though she does not disturb his conception of her as irresponsible.   Her whole life is play-acting, but the role she plays is the one designed for her by him, and by the society for which he speaks, and so deeply ingrained that she is largely unaware of it herself. The rebellion is not yet here though.   She plays happily with the children, characteristically taking on the role of a child herself.   Everything will be all right because â€Å"after all – I only did it for love’s sake† (30) and to please Torvald.   She takes his warning about the corrupting effect of the mother seriously and plans to leave her children, seeing herself alone as guilty.   She continues to play the â€Å"squirrel†, only once laughing at his pettiness, where surely her genuine intelligence comes to the surface.   She will sacrifice herself, even, to save Helmer’s â€Å"honor†, and dances for him, desperately clinging to the myth that â€Å"we’re having such fun† (56).   Mrs Linde urges her to â€Å"tell your husband everything† (63), but Nora knows him well enough to realize that this is not an available option.   Her hope is that â€Å"the wonderful thing† (57) will happen, that Helm er will indeed act as the all-wise protector he has always claimed to be, but even as she says this she is calculating how many hours she has left to live.   She is always too intelligent to believe her own fantasies. Only she can understand Rank’s tragic plight, and her â€Å"Sleep well, Doctor Rank† (69) is moving and compassionate.   Then comes the crisis of the letter and all her buried intelligence comes to the surface and her life is transformed from fantasy to reality.   She is quiet through all his attacks and then â€Å"forgiveness† because â€Å"I think I’m beginning to understand for the first time† (71).   They have never had â€Å"a serious talk† (75) before, and his failure to understand what she means is a measure of the gap between them.   With calm fluency she tells him the complete, unflinching truth as it now appears to her intelligence.   â€Å"You never loved me.   You just thought it was fun to be in love with me† (75).   Movement from her father’s house to her husband’s was simply replacing one nursery with another.   She was never happy, â€Å"only merry† (76), a quite different thing.   Now she must start her education in the world.   He can make nothing of her words, perhaps because they challenge so radically everything he assumes to be true, and he is the most conventional of men, who married, it now emerges, the most original of women. He says she is ill, but in fact â€Å"I’ve never felt so sure – so clear headed – as I do tonight† (78).   She cannot spend the night in a strange man’s house, and the heavy front door slams behind her. It is hardly surprising that A Doll’s House caused a commotion when first performed in 1880.   It still has a power to shock as well as to move audiences.   The view of marriage it contains undoubtedly helped to change the world, and the profound understanding of Nora’s experience provoked thought and reflection in all who saw it.   It is one of the documents of the modern world.

Beliefs About Students Essay It is undeniable that the beliefs about students and education have a profound impact on what is taught and how it is taught, just as the beliefs about life have a profound impact on how individuals live their lives. Educational beliefs are revised and refined and over time becomes stronger as they seem to serve us well and prove to be true. Thus, these beliefs ultimately become our philosophy of education. It is possible that every student that enters a classroom can succeed. However, in order for them to accomplish this, teaching should be student centered. Students should be encouraged to understand and appreciate their uniqueness and to be accountable for their learning and behavior. According to Ornstein and Hunkins (2004) Perennialism relies on the past; especially the past asserted by agreed-on universal knowledge and cherished values. Dunn (2005) also agreed that Perennialism is the oldest educational philosophy and is therefore traditional. It is believed that students are vessels to be filled and disciplined in the proven strategies of the past. This philosophy is supported by the realist philosopher John Locke, who was of the belief that at birth the mind is a blank sheet of paper on which the teacher could write knowledge (Tabula Rasa). According to the essentialist viewpoint, there are certain basic or essential knowledge, skills and understandings that students should master in order to function successfully in the society. These are reading, writing, computing and in today’s world, computer skills. Plato, who was the father of idealism, believed that both male and female are equal and should be educated equally. Therefore, the curriculum is the same for everyone and planning to execution of lessons are dominated by the teacher. However, one should not forget that these beliefs are teacher centered and tend to be more authoritarian and conservative and emphasize only the values and knowledge that have survived through time. Learning occurs through experience, Therefore students should be allowed to develop cognitively through experimentation and to reach their own personal potential instead of being shaped into a specific mould. Dunn (2005) cited Immanuel Kant who agreed that knowledge is rooted in the experience of mankind and can only be achieved by an active and exploratory mind, rather than one that is passive and receptive. Carl Rogers also believed in experiential learning. He believed that unlike academic knowledge, experiential knowledge is required to meet the needs of the learner in order to complete important real-life tasks such as learning to drive a car. Every student is different, no single set of learning outcomes is appropriate for all students. Thus a set curriculum will not be suitable for all. Students should be able to determine what they need to study with the guidance of the teacher. This will help them to arrive at their own understandings. Jean Sartre, a leader of existentialism believed that man’s responsibility is vested in man himself. He further stated that people are entitled to be human with dignity and is a human only when he or she is entirely free and accepts responsibility for his freedom. You may be led to believe that students are blank slates and learn based on mainly academic knowledge that has been tried, tested and proven and that all humans are equal and should be educated equally. However, do not ignore the fact that students are taking to the classroom, their own ideas and materials rather than receiving material in class as it is given. Students restructure the new information to fit into their own cognitive frameworks. In this manner, they actively and individually construct their own knowledge. They also are different thus, the same rigorous curriculum will not work for all students. From these facts one may conclude that in order to help students reach their full potential and gain the knowledge and skills that they will require in their daily lives as a democratic citizen of our society, the student centered approach to how students learn must be practiced. Therefore it is recommended that teachers facilitate students instead of being fountains of wisdom. The teacher should help students in their pursuit for knowledge and also help them acquire the communication, problem solving and critical thinking skills which will enable them to be life-long learners.

The techniques and approaches found in TESOL differ dramatically from those of other areas of teaching because of its student centred and dynamic nature. Furthermore, since TESOL takes place in a multicultural environment; that is, the ESL classroom, intercultural aspects should also be considered, addressed, and ideally, taught. Role plays, group activities, reading and listening passages, videos, among other resources and types of activities can be used to practise language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) and other linguistics elements, such as grammar, lexis, and pronunciation, while training students so that they can achieve intercultural competence.In other words, ESL teachers can raise students' awareness to cross-cultural areas, including eye contact, personal space, body anguage, face-saving, individualism and collectivism, and concurrently, or possibly subsequently, use the contextualized content to practise and/or introduce language, enhancing not only their students' language skills but also their interpersonal and interactional effectiveness.Having the language skills is undoubtedly necessary in order to be in contact with people from different cultures, but understanding such culture s is also important in this globalized world, especially in the workplace, since the ultimate goal of ESL learners is to be able to use English to successfully ommunicate with people from other cultural backgrounds. Considering the fact that TESOL allows more flexibility than in other fields of teaching, and that language is a vital element of culture, linguistic and cross-cultural aspects may be taught in conjunction by ESL teachers.In sum, I would like to stress that the teacher's knowledge of the linguistic items being taught is unarguably important in TESOL, as it is in all areas of teaching; however, in the ESL teaching context, it is equally important to use a variety of ethods and strategies to get the students to actively participate in their learning process, since the ESL classroom is an environment where the focus is on the students, rather than on the teacher, resulting in more STT than TTT, which is a primary concept in TESOL.ESL students have one goal in common: to lea rn English to be able to communicate with people from different cultures, but due to multicultural nature of ESL classes, TESOL teachers need to be culturally sensitive, and if possible, in addition to teaching language, devote some time to training their students to be ore inter-culturally competent to help them use language in a multicultural context more effectively.
